The Jerusalem Cross originated with the Crusaders Cross. When the Franciscans brought it to Jerusalem, it was modified and re-named the Franciscan Cross or the Jerusalem Cross. The center cross represents the city of Jerusalem. The four smaller crosses represents the four sections of Old Jerusalem: Christian, Jewish, Armenian and Muslim. They also represent the four Gospels: Mark, Luke, Matthew and John. The total of the five crosses in the center represent the five wounds Jesus suffered while on the cross. The outer edges of the cross represent the four corners of the world and the spreading of the Word worldwide.
