Famed for her painted portraits, Elizabeth Peyton has also created a wide range of prints over the past two decades, including monotypes, lithographs, woodcuts and etchings. Experimenting with different techniques, she uses a variety of diverse paper stocks and handmade papers as well as various colored and monochromatic inks. In comparison to the diminutiveness of her paintings, the relatively large scale of these prints -- in particular of the lithographs and monotypes -- is remarkable.

Her portrayed subjects here include historical figures such as William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and his lover Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie) and Richard Wagner; visual artists such as Frida Kahlo, David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe; pop stars such as Eminem and Kurt Cobain; as well as her friends.

More recently, Peyton has turned to the genre of the still life to explore and renew its contemporary relevance. This monograph of Peyton's prints is the first in-depth exploration of the artist as a critical printmaker. It includes essays by Sabine Eckmann and Hilton Als, as well as, an interview with the artist conducted by Beate Kemfert. Featuring more than 70 of her prints in color, the catalogue also includes the first comprehensive index of her prints to date.

American artist Elizabeth Peyton has been credited with breathing new life into the ancient art of portraiture. Her highly stylized, idealized oil paintings, drawings, and watercolors are driven by the emotional, adoring eye of an unrequited lover. Willowy, melancholy young men and women contemporary pop stars, royalty, artists, and friends are the magnetic subjects of her devotion. Caught as if in a state of ambiguous absorption and frozen at the height of their youth, they embody a new kind of portraiture that confirms and updates the immortalizing aura of the traditional genre.

Peyton's melding of influences and obsessions ranges widely: from fandom and fashion illustration to academic anatomical studies; from David Hockney and Andy Warhol to a range of Mannerist and Old Master classics; from innocence to the world of bohemia, equally crediting photography and life drawing as its driving forces. Her enamored yet refreshingly informal light wash technique underscores her uniquely delicate, informed hybrid of high and low culture, a statement executed with infectious, seemingly effortless fluidity.

Elizabeth Peyton is an American painter who rose to popularity in the mid 1990s. She is a contemporary artist best known for stylized and idealized portraits of her close friends, pop celebrities, and European monarchy. In the mid-80s, she studied fine arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Peyton's work is characterized by elongated, slender figures with androgynous features which at times resemble fashion illustration. Her work is most often executed in oil paint, applied with washy glazes that are sometimes allowed or encouraged to drip. Several other works in color pencil have also found notoriety and recent work has included etchings. The idealization and stylization of known celebrities has led some critics to characterize her work as derivative of or in the tradition of Andy Warhol with a Romantic overtone. The artist has cited influence by David Hockney.

Her celebrity subjects have included Noel and Liam Gallagher of the rock band Oasis, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, Chloë Sevigny, Prince William and Prince Harry of The House of Windsor, Abraham Lincoln, Graham Coxon, Keith Richards, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, eminem, Ludwig II of Bavaria, and members of The Kennedy Family.
