The standard
Union cavalry guidon during the Civil War featured a swallowtail design, with
the top half in red and the bottom half in blue. Over the background, there was
a pair of crossed sabres in white, which were silhouetted prominently.
The use of red
and blue colors was common in military flags and insignia, symbolizing the
Union and patriotism. The crossed sabres were a traditional symbol of the
cavalry, representing readiness for battle and the martial prowess of the
cavalry troops. The guidon was used by Union cavalry units throughout the Civil
War. It served as a rallying point for soldiers and a marker for unit
identification on the battlefield.
The design of
the cavalry guidon was standardized by the U.S. Army in 1861, shortly after the
outbreak of the Civil War. The pattern was specified in General Order No. 4,
issued by the War Department on January 18, 1862.
Today, the
Union cavalry guidon is frequently used in Civil War reenactments, providing an
authentic representation of the flags carried by Union cavalry units. The
guidon remains a symbol of the bravery and effectiveness of the Union cavalry
during the Civil War, commemorating their role in key battles and campaigns.
Our modern
reproductions utilize the latest digital printing technology to accurately
replicate intricate designs on durable nylon fabric, suitable for both indoor
and outdoor use. Each flag is double-needle stitched with premium
extra-strength polyester thread, and the fly ends feature four rows of
high-strength lock-stitching to minimize fraying and extend the flag's
lifespan. Sturdy, weather-resistant brass grommets ensure greater flag
security.
