The 52nd New
York Infantry was organized in New York City, beginning on August 3, 1861, and
mustered in for three years of service on October 11, 1861, under the command
of Colonel Paul A. Frank. The regiment was formed by consolidating six
companies known as the "German Rangers," under Colonel Emil Von
Schoening, with four companies known as the "Sigel Rifles," under
Colonel Frank. Prior to this consolidation, part of the "Honved
Regiment," commanded by Colonel Edward Count Wratislaw, had already merged
into the "German Rangers."
The regiment
was attached to various brigades throughout its service. Initially, it was part
of French's 3rd Brigade, Sumner's Division, Army of the Potomac, until March
1862. It then served in the 3rd Brigade, Richardson's 1st Division, II Corps,
Army of the Potomac, until August 1862, followed by the 1st Brigade, 1st
Division, II Corps, until September 1862. It then returned to the 3rd Brigade,
1st Division, II Corps, until June 1864, served briefly in the Consolidated
Brigade, 1st Division, II Corps, until November 1862, and finally reverted to
the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, II Corps, where it remained until July 1865.
The 52nd New
York Infantry was mustered out of service on July 25, 1865.
