Kiss of the Fur Queen

Tomson Highway · Uncorrected Proof · Doubleday Canada, Toronto, 1998

Tomson Highway, the Cree playwright from northern Manitoba known for The Rez Sisters and Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing, published his first novel in 1998. It follows two Cree brothers, Jeremiah and Gabriel, sons of a champion dog-sled racer, who are taken from their family to a Catholic residential school, where they suffer abuse. As adults they become artists, a pianist and a dancer, and through it all the Fur Queen, a shape-shifting trickster figure, watches over them. Drawing on Highway's own life and that of his brother René, the novel was nominated for the Books in Canada First Novel Award and is now published as a Penguin Modern Classic. Highway is a member of the Order of Canada.

This is the publisher's uncorrected proof, identified as an "uncorrected manuscript," issued ahead of the Doubleday Canada first edition and carrying the notice that it is not for publication, quotation or copying.
