The Mercedes-Benz SL500 is part of the R230 generation of the SL-Class, which was introduced for the 2003 model year as the successor to the R129. The SL500 continued Mercedes-Benz's tradition of combining high-performance grand touring with luxury and advanced technology. For 2006, the SL500 was powered by a 5.0L V8 producing approximately 302 horsepower and was paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. One of the defining features of the R230 SL-Class was its power-operated retractable hardtop, allowing the car to transition from a luxury coupe to an open-air roadster. The SL500 also featured Mercedes-Benz's Active Body Control suspension system, along with a long list of comfort, convenience, and safety technologies that made it one of the premier luxury roadsters of its era.
