Item Description
Up for sale is a magnificent, large vintage Japanese Satsuma-style flat-sided ceramic urn vase with excellent Western New York estate provenance. Standing over 14 inches tall, this eye-catching vessel features a striking flat-sided baluster body flanked by two heavy, brilliant gilded scroll handles at the neck.
The front and back showcase large, detailed figurative panels depicting Geishas and elegant ladies strolling through a traditional lakeside palace garden. The artwork is heavily accented with moriage detailing—featuring thick, raised enamel beading, textured dot work, and extensive bright gold gilt trim that catches the light beautifully from every angle. The neck, shoulders, and base are framed by dense, midnight-black and cobalt-blue bands overflowing with stylized golden scrolls and traditional floral symbols.
The interior rim reveals a stunning, cream-colored crackle glaze finish (kannyu).
Time-Capsule Provenance Note: This vase was discovered with a vintage Traditional Chinese-language newspaper from Toronto, Canada, dated June 19, 1998, stuffed inside its mouth to protect it during historic transit or storage. This fascinating artifact helps anchor the piece's late 20th-century collection history!
