The Paradise Motel

Eric McCormack · 1st Edition · Viking, Markham, Ontario, 1989

Eric McCormack's first novel grew from his short story "Sad Stories in Patagonia." Its narrator, Ezra Stevenson, hears from his dying grandfather a story of murder and mutilation in a family long ago, and spends his life tracing what became of the children involved, through a labyrinth of tales within tales. Dark, inventive and often blackly comic, it was compared on publication to Borges and Kobo Abe, and won the Scottish Arts Council Spring Book Award in 1990.

McCormack (1938 to 2023) was born in Scotland and taught English at St. Jerome's University at the University of Waterloo for more than thirty years; the University of Waterloo holds his papers, including the typed draft of this novel. His earlier story collection, Inspecting the Vaults, won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for the Canada and Caribbean region, and he was later shortlisted for the Governor General's Award. This is the first edition, published by Viking in Canada in 1989, in its original dust jacket.
