Farnborough Man Carrying Centrifuge RAF Institute Aviation Medicine 1955 Photo
This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 10 x 8 inches (255x202mm).
It shows the man-carrying centrifuge at the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine, Farnborough, inside a large room with a panelled ceiling and strip lights. A long lattice arm of tubular steel girders stretches away from the camera towards a central support, with banks of electrical connectors along its top. At the near end of the arm is a dark, riveted, rounded cabin with a row of glazed windows across its upper half. A man can be seen seated inside the cabin through one of the windows, and a small step stands on the floor beneath its door.
The reverse has an applied typed caption in purple ink, reading: 'Opening ceremony and setting in motion of the centrifuge at the R.A.F. Institute of Aviation Medicine, Farnborough, Hants. The man carrying centrifuge at the Institute, is a piece of apparatus capable of simulating the centrifugal acceleration encountered by pilots when they change direction at high speed. This can result in various physiological effects, even causing unconsciousness.' A second paragraph reads: 'The Man Carrying centrifuge at Farnborough, showing the cabin where the "subject" sits, whilst the whole machine is whirled round at a speed around the 100 M.P.H. mark. While the machine revolves the "subjects" reactions to [word typed over] centrifugal acceleration. S.&.G. 17/5/55. R.R.' Below the caption is a purple stamp for Sport & General Press Agency, Limited, London, along with a telephone number.
