Tay Ninh Vietnam War South Vietnamese Marines Civilians Nik Wheeler 1968 Photo

This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 10¼ x 8 inches (258x203mm).

It shows Vietnamese civilians and South Vietnamese marines on a dusty open area in front of a building with slatted wooden walls. A woman in a white blouse lies on her back in the foreground with her arms outstretched, beside a standing woman in a chequered head wrap and patterned trousers. Behind her, a kneeling woman with her mouth open grips the raised arm of a person in light-coloured clothing who lies on the ground, while a marine in a camouflage-covered helmet lifts that person's legs. A second soldier with a rifle and pack stands behind, and a child is visible in the background.

The reverse has a yellow typed caption slip, printed upside down relative to the stamps, reading 'SGP 1606900 Premium Service. Crossfire. Tay Ninh, South Vietnam: South Vietnamese marines help Vietnamese citizens caught in crossfire during fighting between ARVN troops and North Vietnamese regulars on the outskirts of this provincial capital, 53 miles northwest of Saigon. Women and children cried and fainted as members of their families were wounded during the battle. Credit (UPI photo by Nik Wheeler) 9/17/68 SR'. There is a purple copyright stamp for United Press International (UK) Ltd, Planet News, London. A grey stamp reads 'Please credit United Press International Photo. This picture is for your publication only and must not be loaned, syndicated or used for advertising purposes without written permission..', partly covered by the caption slip. A boxed stamp reads 'Used 26 Dec 1968 TV Times'. A red stamp reads 'This print is the property of the Picture Library TV Times. Please return '. A handwritten note along the top edge reads 'Viet Nam - South - War - Refugees + D.P.' s ', preceded by a crossed-out word.
