Claas Senator Combine Harvester Crash Dunstable Gliders Photographer 1972 Photo

This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 10¾ x 7¾ inches (273x198mm).

It shows a Claas combine harvester lying upside down on a hillside of stubble, with the lettering 'Claas Senator' appearing inverted on the side of the grain tank. The wheels, ladders and underside of the machine point skywards, and the unloading auger and parts of the header lie on the ground beside it. A boy stands in the foreground and other children are among the wreckage, one on top of the machine. In the sky above, two gliders and a light aircraft are visible, and the valley below holds a large gathering of parked cars, caravans and tents near a group of hangars.

The reverse has date stamps reading '31 Aug 1972' and '21 May 1973'. There is a large stamp for the Evening Post, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, along with a telephone number. A further stamp reads 'John Jones'. A note in red ink reads 'Farming (Dunstable)', and a blue ink note appears to read 'Yes fixed'. A pencil line marks the crop, with the note 'Cut out' circled in pencil. An applied 'Echo' label has spaces for page and number, edition, day, columns and depth, partly filled in by hand with entries including '70' and 'Mo'.

This photograph comes from a privately curated collection assembled over more than fifty years by an experienced collector. The images were individually sourced from galleries, dealers, auctions, and other collections, with a consistent focus on strong composition, atmosphere, and historical interest.

Each photograph offered has been selected on its own merits from that wider collection. The result is a group of images that are both individually compelling and part of a coherent, carefully built body of work. For collectors, this offers an opportunity to acquire material selected by a discerning eye, whether to strengthen an existing collection or to begin a new one.

This collection is being dispersed in stages, with several hundred additional photographs being listed each month.
