This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 10 x 7½ inches (256x193mm).
It shows the wreckage of a crashed aircraft lying in an open field, which the reverse identifies as Rudolf Hess's plane in Scotland. A large crumpled section of wing or fuselage fills the foreground, with torn metal skin and exposed ribs. Three soldiers in battledress stand beside the wreckage: one wears a steel helmet and carries a rifle with fixed bayonet, one is smiling and holding a torn fragment, and one wears a beret with a cap badge and holds a curved piece of debris. Two uniformed police officers in peaked caps stand behind the wreckage, with fenced farmland, hedgerows and trees stretching to the horizon.
The reverse has a pencil note reading 'Rudolf Hess's plane, Scotland, 1941'. Two torn remnants of a typed caption remain, partly legible, with words including 'The w..' on the left and '..h Rudolf' and '..of his' on the right. A blue stamp reads 'Copyright photo issued by Central Press Photos Ltd. incorporating Central News Illustrations Service, London'. A second blue stamp reads 'Certified by Central Press Photos, Ltd. as passed by censor, Press and Censorship Bureau'.
