This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 5½ x 3½ inches (139x91mm).
It shows two dead horses lying in deep mud at the edge of a road, with one carcass opened and its entrails exposed. Three soldiers in military uniform stand behind them. One wears a long caped greatcoat, and another wears a tunic, cap and boots. A wooden cart or wagon stands in the background beside a stone building, and a tree trunk rises at the right. A water-filled ditch runs along the roadside, and the uniforms and card suggest a date around the First World War.
The reverse has a postcard layout with a dotted vertical divider and dotted address lines. A small printed number at the bottom reads '2 62'.
Each photograph offered has been selected on its own merits from that wider collection. The result is a group of images that are both individually compelling and part of a coherent, carefully built body of work. For collectors, this offers an opportunity to acquire material selected by a discerning eye, whether to strengthen an existing collection or to begin a new one.
This collection is being dispersed in stages, with several hundred additional photographs being listed each month.
