Soul Star – Sega CD – in an EB Games Gutted & Sealed Case- New Old Stock |

Item For sale:
This eBay Offering is for a New Old Stock, Un-Used, Gutted and Re-Sealed, copy of the "Soul Star" video game. The game was developed and designed by Core Design Ltd. to run on a Sega CD video gaming system. This video game package features its original Electronics Boutique store price tag on the front-side of the clear plastic outer seal of the package. The upc code for this video game package is 031763075806
This empty/gutted resealed by the store game box and sealed game disc were used as a theft deterrent in an Electronics Boutique store. Potential buyers would bring the empty display box from the sales floor to the sales counter, be charged for the game and then store staff would grab a factory sealed version of the game from secure store stock and hand it over to the customer. The empty display box would be returned to the sales floor for the next potential buyer. Once the last factory sealed version had been sold, store employees would then place the un-used game disc back into the display box and sell the package as a new but not factory sealed game.
|
|
| This has to be a rarely found format. Think about it, gutted, store floor display, video games were meant to be reassembled and sold once all of store's inventory of factory sealed versions of a particular game had been sold. This game was never meant to be removed from a retail store in its current format. The only thing that makes sense to me is that this game was originally either removed from the store by an employee or obtained by a collector from the stock of an Electronics Boutique store that was going to or had already gone out of business.
|
|
| Item Condition:
Both the Game Box and the Game Disc are sealed in plastic. The seal around the disc is definitely not from the factory as that is not how they were shipped from the factory, I believe that both the seal on the game case and the seal covering the game disc were both created by a staff member at the Electonics Boutique store. While there are some openings in the outer plastic seals. this un-sed, New Old Stock video game package in gutted/re-sealed condition There are a number of opennings in the clear plastic outer seal as can be seen in our photos.

Why is the game
box and Game Disc seperated and sealed individually?
This is known in the video game community and retail industry as "gutting" a game. Electronics Boutique (later EB Games) pioneered this method which was commonly used throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The goal of "gutting" a game was to prevent shoplifting while still displaying game cases on the sales floor.
How the "Gutting" Process Worked
• Opening the Copy: When a new shipment arrived, employees would unwrap a single copy of a game, remove the disc/cartridge and manual, and place them safely in a sleeve behind the counter.
• The Floor Display: The empty case (the "gut") was placed out on the shelves for customers to browse.
• Selling the Last Copy: When the store sold out of factory-sealed copies, the only remaining option was the display box on the floor. The employee would retrieve the disc from behind the counter and put it back into the case.
The "Resealing" Controversy
Because the final copy had been opened, it technically lost its factory seal. To pass it off as standard inventory, employees used heat-sealing shrink-wrap machines in the back room—or sometimes industrial hair dryers—to tightly re-wrap the case in plastic. Alternatively, they would close the open edge with a clear, circular plastic sticker.
This remains one of the most heavily debated practices in gaming retail. While companies maintain the game is physically "new" because it has never been played, customers and collectors heavily criticize it because they are paying full MSRP for an unsealed item that has been handled by the public

| This item is from my personal collection. Back in 2010, I purchased this uniquely packaged Sega CD video game that was originally offerd for sale by an "Electronics Botique" (EB Games) and stored it away in a sealed clear plastic bag that was then place into a fairly tight-fitting cardboard box in a climate-controlled safe location until I decided to put it up for sale here on eBay. I am not the person who originally purchased this game package from EB Games.

Note: We do not set shipping rates associated with our eBay oferings, we enter package dimensions and weight and the USPS determines the shipping costs. We actually lose money on every shipping transaction because it does not take into account the costs of eBay fees, shipping materials (boxes, bubble wrap, tape, etc.)We do Not Ship directly to International buyers/addresses only to the USA. We will only ship items to the address that buyer's have on file with eBay, NO EXCEPTIONS! |
