Description
The engraved 43 copper plates are complete with a double-page map of the areas covered by the Companion and a full-page map of the Isle of Wight.
Charles Smith is best known for his ‘New English Atlas’ published in 1804. This publication was based on the road strips of John Ogilby with three strips appearing to the page, similar to those of Laurie and Whittle, all engraved by J. Gardner. There were three further editions appearing in 1827, 1830 and 1835. This companion map is scarcely seen as it was not as successful as the Traveller's Companion of Laurie & Whittle.
The first 4 strips have neatly red-inked road lines and the two maps similarly have main roads and boundary lines inked. Initially, as the inking is so well done, I presumed it was original printing.
It has historically been re-bound in cloth, please see detailed photos.
It measures 7.5 inches by 5 inches.
Please see my other rare good quality books listed.
