For your consideration is a rare vintage 10 inch 78 rpm record by the Kidoodlers entitled Pop Corn Man b/w Doodle Doo Doo. This is one of the more scarce versions of this tune from 1937. The most famous version is by Benny Goodman, which was released for only about a week and recalled without any official explanation as to why. Swing collectors latched onto a rumor that the song included drug references which Victor did not want tarnishing their public image, or getting them into trouble with the by then recently solidified Catholic lobby, but multiple other versions were released without controversy, making this theory unlikely. Instead, record licensing had become a monopolized business thanks to the depression, and the last company standing, ASCAP, began abusing their monopoly powers substantially by 1937. Labels, artists and stations, adjusted in various ways. Victor, whicj was the largest record company and the biggest target for ASCAP's greed and litigiousness, acted defensively, and would pull releases which ASCAP disputed and re-release catalogue numbers with alternate sides. Artists, like Duke Ellington, overhauled their old catalogues with entirely new songs not controlled by ASCAP, and the industry began recording substantially more non ASCAP artists, reintroducing the older 20s talent scout model at a larger scale and bringing osbcure local talent to major label rosters like never before. Part of this trend was a resurgence in popularity of "corn" or novelty music, most famously the Hoosier Hot Shots, which once again could provide commercial success without ASCAP taking a cut. This record happens to be exactly one of those early novelty records in response to ASCAP's maneuvers. Very interesting piece of music industry history!

All of our old shellac and vinyl 78 records are packed with utmost care and precaution so as to ensure they arrive to you in the same condition in which they were shipped out. I have extensive experience shipping 78s. For an in depth explanation of my shipping methods, see the bottom of this page. All items will be shipped within 3 days of purchase. All good faith offers thoroughly considered.

Keep in mind that for the highest fidelity reproduction results, a correct sized, well maintained stylus should always be used and antique records should also always receive a deep cleaning with a stiff bristled brush and a non-alcohol based soap. I do not provide grading beyond what is required by eBay. If the photographs prove insufficient, do not hesitate to reach out with a question, as well as any other type of inquiry related to an item.

All 78 rpm records, vinyl or shellac, will be shipped sandwiched between either thick cardboard or some spare 78 rpm discs to provide substantial reinforcement for uneven pressure placed on a package during shipment. The record sandwich is then suspended in packing peanuts on all sides. Packing peanuts are the optimal durable memory material as they will insulate your item against any acute forces such as a fall or any type of blow and unlike bubble wrap will not pop and lose their shape if subjected to a strong force.
