STEPPENWOLF "LIVE" Original 1976 double LP of great hard rock from one of the most successful bands of the late 1960s. They began life in Canada as Sparrow but migrated to L.A in 1967 & got a deal with Lou Adler's Dunhill Records. A name change was in order & Sparrow was reborn as Steppenwolf, named after the classic Herman Hesse novel. Tough lead singer Joachim Krauledat, professionally known as John Kay was the front-man thanks to his growling lead vocals & commanding stage presence complete with wraparound shades whether it was day or night. The rest of the band were no slouches either comprised of Goldy McJohn on Hammond B-3 organ, fellow German bassist Nick St. Nicholas, Larry Byron on lead guitar & drummer Jerry Edmonton. Most of their early key tracks are here in extended versions ranging from the big hits "Born To Be Wild", a record which shot to #2 in 1968 after it's inclusion in the film "Easy Rider" & the psychedelic follow-up "Magic Carpet Ride" which did nearly as well reaching #3 later in the year as well as some of their lesser hits from 1970- "Monster" (#39) & "Hey Lawdy Mama" (#35).  Key album tracks such as "The Pusher", "Power Play" & "Draft Resister" were also performed live. To solve the age-old mystery- Who is Mars Bonfire- the author of "Born To Be Wild"? He was actually Dennis Edmonton- the Canadian lead guitarist for Sparrow & brother of drummer Jerry Edmonton (who remained with the group throughout its tenure). "Live" is an important document of Steppenwolf's early years recorded at various concerts during their successful arena tour of 1970 & more importantly it still sounds great today! (ABC-Dunhill) DSD-50075 double LP housed in a gatefold cover.
