Offered here is an 1880-S Morgan Dollar graded MS65 by PCGS and approved by CMQ, housed in a PCGS standard blue label holder. This is a Gem San Francisco Morgan in 90% silver from a mintage of 8,900,000, and it carries bold rainbow toning on both sides.
While this isn't the toning that brings at or near five figures because it doesn't carry 80% or more of the obverse, it is the exact vibrant tones that collectors pursue. In this case, it's still covering roughtly 1/3 of the coin, which still makes it a standout PQ toner! With the Gem assigned grade that radiates luster through the vibrant colorful hues, this specimen is quite the catch!
The toning is the star of the show. On the obverse, vivid rainbow color sweeps across Liberty's hair and the right side of the coin in gold, magenta, violet, blue and green, while her face stays a lighter silver-gold, with some darker mottled toning in the fields. On the reverse, a rainbow arc of orange, red and blue runs along the bottom rim beneath ONE DOLLAR around a soft silver-gray center. Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's wing feathers are crisply struck under the color.
The green CMQ (Collectible Market Qualified) sticker adds another layer of confidence. CMQ was founded by Hall of Fame numismatists David Hall and Greg Roberts, and a CMQ sticker means both of them unanimously agreed the coin meets their standards for grade and eye appeal. CMQ's own lookup confirms this exact coin as Verified CMQ. It is a strong fit for a toned Morgan collection, an 1880s San Francisco date run or a CMQ-approved set.
