Paper Shadows: A Chinatown Memoir

Wayson Choy · Signed and Inscribed · Penguin Canada, Toronto, 2005

Wayson Choy (1939 to 2019), the Vancouver-born Toronto writer best known for his novel The Jade Peony, grew up in Vancouver's Chinatown in the 1940s. In 1995, a stranger's phone call revealed to him that he had been adopted. Paper Shadows follows his search through family secrets, memory and the history of Chinese Canadians to understand the parents who raised him and the people who gave him up. First published by Viking Canada in 1999, the memoir was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award and the Charles Taylor Prize, and won the Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction.

This copy of the 2005 Penguin Canada paperback edition is signed and inscribed by Wayson Choy on the title page with words that echo the memoir itself. The inscription appears to read: "Family is who loves you. Best wishes."
