Alan G. Wilkinson · Signed · Presentation Copy to William and Nona Heaslip · Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, 1987
Henry Moore (1898 to 1986) gave the Art Gallery of Ontario the largest public collection of his work in the world: 893 sculptures, drawings and prints, housed in the gallery's Henry Moore Sculpture Centre. Published the year after his death for the exhibition celebrating that gift (16 September 1987 to 7 February 1988), this catalogue by Alan G. Wilkinson, the AGO's Moore curator, recounts Moore's long relationship with Toronto, from his association with Viljo Revell, architect of Toronto City Hall, and the acquisition of The Archer for Nathan Phillips Square, to the creation of the Sculpture Centre. It traces Moore's life and work and catalogues the collection in detail, with 434 illustrations, 34 in colour, and a director's foreword by William J. Withrow recalling his own memories of the artist.
This copy is signed by Alan G. Wilkinson on the title page, and was presented by the Art Gallery of Ontario to Mr. and Mrs. William Heaslip in recognition of their support of the gallery, with a presentation bookplate signed by the director, W. J. Withrow. William Arthurs Heaslip, C.M., and Nona Macdonald Heaslip, C.M., were among Toronto's most generous supporters of the arts. The copy comes from their own library, in its dust jacket and slipcase.
