The Item

This is an original 1982 Warner Bros. "Diver Down" album cover (catalog number BSK 3677) signed by all four members of the classic Van Halen lineup: Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony. The signatures are spread across the red-and-white diver-flag artwork, so each one stands on its own.

GFA (Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators) issued a separate examination report for each signer, comparing each signature against three authenticated exemplars. GFA found all four signatures genuine. All of the reports and the certificate are shown below.

About the Album

"Diver Down" was released on April 14, 1982 and is Van Halen's fifth studio album. It spent 65 weeks on the US album chart and had sold four million copies in the United States by 1998. The cover shows the red "diver down" flag, which warns that a diver is in the water. The back cover carries a photo of the band on stage at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida, taken on October 24, 1981, at the end of a set opening for The Rolling Stones. The album includes the band's covers of "(Oh) Pretty Woman" and "Dancing in the Street."

Authentication

GFA Certification Number: GFAA-24086
Examination date: 9/26/2022 • Authenticators 3 and 6

GFA's forensic document and signature examiners compared each of the four signatures against three authenticated exemplars (E1 through E3). They measured style, line quality, slant, size, proportion, spacing, base alignment, initial, terminal and connecting strokes, character formation and idiosyncratic characteristics. Every category was graded similar for every signer. GFA's findings state that each signature is consistent with known exemplars and that GFA is confident each is genuine and authentic.

GFA's ink and document analysis also confirms that this album, and the pens used, were available at the time the album was released.

Condition

Please note: the corners of the cover show damage. The damage is limited to the corners and is nowhere near any of the four signatures, which are on the clean face of the cover and are not affected by it.

David Lee Roth's and Eddie Van Halen's signatures are in a lighter, silver-toned ink, so they are softer than the bold black signatures of Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony. The GFA enlargements above show each one clearly. This is a 44-year-old cover, so please study all of the photos carefully, as they are part of the description.
