The Life of Our Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ – Rev. John Fleetwood – 1854

Large Victorian illustrated edition of Fleetwood’s celebrated life of Christ, published in London by Thomas Kelly, Paternoster Row, in 1854.

The volume combines Fleetwood’s account of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ with additional religious material, including Evidences of the Christian Religion by Beilby Porteus and sermons by Dr Doddridge.

A substantial mid-19th-century religious work, extensively illustrated with numerous steel engravings, including large full-page biblical scenes, portraits and devotional subjects. Several of the plates remain particularly attractive and retain strong visual impact.

The book has been rebacked and repaired, retaining the original marbled boards with a later leather spine and replacement spine labels. The restoration has made what was clearly a much-used Victorian volume into a reasonably solid and usable book while preserving much of its original character.

Internally there is considerable age-related wear, particularly to the opening leaves, including staining, tears, losses and old repairs, although much of the main text remains clear and readable. The combination of the large format, marbled boards and engraved illustrations gives the book considerable decorative appeal despite its faults.

An interesting original Victorian religious volume for collectors of 19th-century illustrated books, biblical engravings, Christian literature, Fleetwood editions and antique decorative books.
