Up for sale is this 1826 George IV-era Ecclesiastical Document from Fort William in Bengal, India. The handwritten manuscript is on heavy parchment paper. It is from the Company Raj period, when India was directly administered and ruled commercially and politically by the British East India Company. This British Colonial record relates to the probate and administration for the estate of Lieutenant Frederick Considine. This Grant of Probate certifies Frances Evans as the sole executrix named in the will of Thomas Evans.
The document was issued by the Ecclesiastical division of the Supreme Court of Judicature, which handled wills, estates, and probate
matters for European subjects in India. The signature of Sir Charles Edward Grey, Knight (Chief Justice at Fort William) validates the grant, and it's dated 18th Jan.1826. To the left side a large, highly detailed red wax wafer seal is embossed with the British Royal Coat of Arms, is affixed.
Provenance: This document was acquired by a historical ephemera dealer based in Bandra, India (a suburb of Mumbai) as part of a large collection of antiquarian legal documents from Fort William in Bengal.
*Many more historical documents from British Colonial period, going back to the 1600s during the Mughal Empire!
