1970's Medieval / Crusader figural chess set - sometimes sold as Camelot, King Arthur, or Norman vs Saxon.
Age:
Early to mid-1970s. Made in Western Europe, most likely West Germany. The style, the cardboard divider box with green felt bottoms, and the cream / deep red colorway are all textbook for that period.
Material - not ivory, bone, or stone:
It's molded hard plastic / poly-resin. Collectors often call it "crushed stone resin" or "hard plastic" because it's made to look like antiqued ivory/bronze.
• The cream color is off-white plastic with a dark brown antique wash rubbed into all the incised detail to make the carving pop
• The red/burgundy side is the same base plastic painted dark red with the same brown wash.
• Bases have thin green felt glued on, typical for these vintage sets.
The figures:
• King - tall crowned king with sword
• Queen - long gown, holds a lute/mandolin
• Bishop - armored knight with hand on chest
• Knight - horse head with ornate caparison / scale armor - this is the piece in your first photo
• Rook - round castle tower with brick detail
• Pawn - foot soldier with two-handed sword
I picked these up at an Estate Auction about 20 years ago.
They don’t appear to have ever been used.
