RETURN TO MACON COUNTY — Original Vestron Video VHS Release

Nick Nolte, Don Johnson, and Robin Mattson star in this 1975 action drama about three young people, a customized '57 Chevy, drag racing, and a whole lot of trouble on the road.

This is the early and very hard to find Vestron Video release, catalog number VA4039 — NOT the later Video Treasures issue. This is a particularly difficult Vestron title to come across, and the original Vestron packaging makes this a neat piece of early home-video history for collectors of vintage VHS and Vestron releases.

PLAY TESTED — WITH SCREENSHOTS

This tape plays wonderfully. I fully fast-forwarded and rewound the tape, played it from the beginning through the opening material, and spot-checked playback throughout the program. There were no tracking problems, dropouts, or other mechanical playback issues observed. Picture and sound remained consistent throughout testing.

The included screenshots show the actual tape playing.

PERSONAL ASSESSMENT — BASED ON VHS STANDARDS

Video: 7/10

Audio: 8/10

The video and audio quality are consistent with what I'd expect from an early-1980s VHS release of a 1975 film. The limitations here are primarily those of the source material, transfer, and video equipment of the era — not problems with the physical tape or its playback.

A NOTE ABOUT THE CASSETTE:

There is a noticeable amount of dust visible inside the cassette around the outside surfaces of the reels. The cassette is not loaded with dust, but there is enough present to be clearly visible in the photographs. I've included photographs showing both sides of the reel windows — including one where the tape is behind the reel and another where the tape is not behind it — making it clear that the dust is on the plastic/reel area rather than on the tape itself.

The tape itself is clean, and there is NO visible mold on the tape.

The cassette has not been opened or cosmetically cleaned. That's intentional. A buyer who wants to open the shell and clean the interior can certainly do so, while a collector who doesn't mind the dust can simply enjoy the tape as it is. The dust does not appear to affect playback whatsoever.

As with any vintage VHS, individual VCRs can behave differently, so playback results can vary from one deck to another.

The outer sleeve shows substantial age and handling wear, including edge wear, scuffing, discoloration, and wear to the corners, all of which are shown in the photographs. The original artwork, Vestron Video branding, and VA4039 catalog number are all present.

A genuinely cool early-VHS piece for collectors of Vestron Video, vintage home video, 1970s drive-in/action films, or Nick Nolte and Don Johnson.
