IT FITS WITH THE REEL ON THE ROD, AND THE CORD

This is the design point, and it is why a generic
reel cover does not do the job.
THE GUARD GOES ON WITH THE REEL STILL
MOUNTED TO THE ROD, AND THE POWER CORD STILL
ATTACHED.
On a boat, that is the difference between a cover
you use and a cover that stays in the bag. Between
drops, between marks, running back in - the reel
gets covered without unclipping anything.
Shimano also state the HANDLE DOES NOT NEED
FOLDING.

Neoprene does two things at once: it absorbs
impact, and it keeps water off. On a boat, both
matter - the reel is hit by tackle boxes, gaffs
and other rods, and it is rained on and sprayed.
Two reinforcements are built in:
A PLATE IN THE BASE, protecting the LINE
COUNTER - the most vulnerable and most
expensive part of an electric reel to damage
A PROTECTIVE SHEET positioned for when the
ROD IS STOOD AGAINST THE GUNWALE - the
moment when the reel is hard against the
boat's side
Those two details are why this is Shimano's
electric reel guard and not a general purpose
neoprene sleeve.

OVERVIEW

An electric reel is the most expensive thing in the rod holder.
A Beastmaster 9000 is a motor, a gearbox and a line counter working in
salt water, and it costs more than most outboard-powered skiffs' worth of
rod and reel combined. Deep dropping in four, six, eight hundred metres
is exactly the fishing it was built for - and exactly the fishing that is
hard on tackle.
What damages these reels is rarely the fish. It is the deck: the rod laid
down, the reel knocked by a gaff or another rod, stood against the gunwale,
caught by spray, rained on while the boat runs between marks.
Shimano make this guard to stay on through all of that, and to come off in
a second when the rod is picked up.

A guard that is too small will not go on. One that is too large will not
stay on.
IT IS WATER RESISTANT, NOT WATERPROOF
Neoprene sheds spray and rain. It is not a dry bag.
Do not store a wet reel in it
Rinse the reel, dry it, then cover it
A reel left in a damp neoprene cover corrodes
faster than one left uncovered
On an electric reel, where a motor and electrical contacts are inside,
that matters more than it does on a conventional one.
RINSE THE GUARD TOO
Salt crystallises in the nylon facing. Rinse it in fresh water with the
rest of your tackle and dry it before putting it away.
DRY IT FLAT, OUT OF THE SUN
Prolonged UV degrades neoprene. Dry it in the shade.
IT DOES NOT PROTECT AGAINST A DROP
3 mm of neoprene absorbs knocks. It does not save a reel dropped onto a
deck or a jetty.
TAKE IT OFF TO READ THE COUNTER
The guard covers the reel including the counter. It is a between-drops
cover, not a fishing-with cover.
THE CORD PASSES THROUGH
The guard is designed to fit with the power cord connected. Check the cord
is not pinched or kinked where it exits, particularly if you run a heavier
aftermarket cord.
