Wonderful and unusual antique 21-inch nun doll, attributed to Armand Marseille, Germany, mold 370, based upon the impressed “370” marking visible on the back of the head.

The doll features a beautiful bisque shoulder head with inset glass eyes, finely painted eyelashes and brows, rosy cheeks, open mouth with visible teeth, and brown wig. She is dressed in an elaborate period-style Catholic nun’s habit, including a long black dress and veil, white wimple and head covering, stockings, and a hanging metal crucifix.

The layered habit shows extensive hand construction and appears to have considerable age. The combination of the early German doll and complete religious presentation makes this a particularly striking example for display.

Measures approximately 21 inches tall.

Condition: Antique condition with expected wear from age and storage. The habit and white fabric show discoloration, spotting, loose stitching, fraying and other age-related wear. There are loose/unfinished areas beneath the rear head covering and wear to the clothing fastenings. Stockings show age and wear. Doll has not been cleaned, restored or altered by us. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.

The only head marking currently visible is “370.” Because additional markings may be concealed beneath the wig/head covering, the doll is being attributed to Armand Marseille based on the mold number and construction rather than represented as definitively maker-marked.

An exceptionally atmospheric antique piece with crossover appeal to collectors of German bisque dolls, Armand Marseille dolls, Catholic religious artifacts, convent/nun memorabilia, ecclesiastical antiques and unusual Victorian/Edwardian-style displays
