1930s Chinese Suanpan Abacus – Vintage Wooden Counting Tool from Thailand

For sale is a genuine vintage Chinese suanpan (abacus) dating to the 1930s, sourced directly from a family friend who is a longtime Thai merchant. These traditional calculating instruments were widely used across Southeast Asia by Chinese communities and merchants for commerce, accounting, and daily business well into the mid-20th century.

Key Features & Measurements:

• Classic Chinese suanpan design with 2 upper (heaven) beads and 5 lower (earth) beads per rod — the standard configuration for efficient decimal calculations.

• Overall dimensions: Approximately 12 inches long (30.5 cm) by 5.5 inches wide (14 cm), and about 1 inch thick. (Please see photos with ruler for precise scale.)

• Constructed from dark, aged hardwood frame with visible wear, patina, and character consistent with 80–90+ years of use.

• Beads appear to be carved wood or similar traditional material, darkened with age and handling. Rods are a mix of metal and bamboo/wood, typical of period construction.

• Two crossbars divide the heaven and earth sections, with some original wooden dividers intact.

Condition: Good vintage condition for its age. Shows honest wear, minor surface scratches, scuffs, and discoloration from decades of practical use — exactly what you’d expect from a working merchant’s tool. All beads move freely on their rods (some with more resistance than others due to age and patina). No major cracks, breaks, or missing parts. A wonderful display piece for collectors of Asian antiques, vintage calculating devices, or historical business artifacts.

This abacus carries real historical charm — a tangible link to pre-digital commerce in Thailand’s Chinese merchant communities. It would make an excellent addition to a collection of antique tools, Asian cultural items, or vintage office/calculating memorabilia. It also displays beautifully on a shelf, desk, or as part of a larger antique collection.

Provenance: Acquired from a trusted Thai merchant family friend with deep roots in traditional trade.
