19th Century Peranakan Carved Giltwood Ornament Straits Architectural Fragment.

A finely carved 19th-century Peranakan giltwood architectural ornament from the Straits region, displaying the elaborate decorative vocabulary associated with Straits Chinese craftsmanship.

The hand-carved openwork composition features scrolling foliage, stylized leaves and ornamental vegetal motifs arranged in a balanced, sculptural design. Deep carving and pierced sections create a pronounced three-dimensional effect, while surviving gilding and traces of reddish-toned decoration emphasize the relief and intricate workmanship.

Originating from the multicultural artistic traditions of the Straits region, this decorative carving would originally have formed part of an architectural or interior decorative scheme. Its exact original architectural function and precise place of manufacture within the Straits region are unknown.

The naturally weathered gilding, intricate openwork and compact architectural form give the piece considerable decorative presence. It is particularly relevant to collections of Peranakan antiques, Straits Chinese decorative arts, Southeast Asian woodcarving, antique giltwood and architectural fragments.

Condition

Antique condition with substantial age-related patina and wear. There are losses to the gilding, surface cracking and craquelure, together with minor imperfections consistent with the object's 19th-century age. The remaining gilding and reddish-toned details retain an attractive naturally aged surface.

VERSION FRANÇAISE
