Collection of 10 Vintage Glass Prosthetic Eyes / Ocular Prostheses with Pell Optical Box

A fascinating collection of ten glass artificial/prosthetic eyes, retained together in an original period optical trade box from Pell Optical Co. Ltd.

The box is an important part of the collection and carries several surviving period labels and annotations, including “Spectacles Museum Pieces” and Pell Optical/Supra House labelling.

Most significantly, the underside retains a clear London postal cancellation dated 16 VI 64 (16 June 1964), providing a firm date for the box’s use.

The individual ocular prostheses display a wonderful range of iris colours including blue, grey, green, hazel and brown, with finely worked iris detail and delicate red vascular decoration to the sclera. The backs are concave and translucent, consistent with traditional glass shell construction.

The collection has been kept exactly as found and includes the original box, labels and associated packing material. I have deliberately not cleaned or altered the eyes, labels or box, preserving the group and its provenance.

An unusual piece of British optical and medical history with strong appeal to collectors of medical antiques, ophthalmic and optometry history, optical instruments, prosthetics, scientific curiosities and museum collections.

Important: Sold solely as a vintage historical/collectable display collection. These are not offered for medical, clinical or prosthetic use.

Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description. The box is fragile and worn from age and use, with old tape, staining, creasing and losses. The eyes themselves vary slightly in condition and manufacture.

The complete group of ten, original box and associated material are being sold together and will not be split.
