A Very Fine Antique Winchcombe Pottery Slipware Dish

An incredibly beautiful example of an early Winchcombe press-moulded dish.

The earthenware body of rounded oblong form, and glazed in the most sumptuous and rich lead-based or 'galena green' glaze, with a piped design of deep chocolate coloured slip.

The rim of the dish with a 'pie crust' finish.

Impressed verso with the old / archaic Winchcombe Pottery seal mark.

Bottle kiln and wood-fired (c. late 1930's - 1940's)

Probably Ray Finch (possibly Michael Cardew).

This really is a gorgeous old thing, the combination of a delicious, high-gloss galena and thickly piped chocolate slip has been fired to absolute perfection. The condition is also remarkably good. Save for a few minor surface scratches, this dish has survived for approx 80 years with practically no use.

25 cms wide x 22 cms deep x 5.5 cms high

Condition:

In wonderful condition. No significant damage or restoration. A network of crazing is present to the deep green pooled glaze - this being fairly typical of pottery of this type and age. There are few minor surface scratches to the glaze interior (for example, please see that captured in the last photo). Otherwise, this is a press-moulded dish in outstanding and largely unused condition. Hard to find this good!
