These two early examples of the Volland Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls are full of stories. You can just tell by looking at the smiles on their faces. Even though they are both very old and are not as clean and tidy as they once were, they both still have that glimmer of joy in their eyes.

 Andy is 16” tall and was designed, like Ann, by Johnny Gruelle. He is all cloth, firmly stuffed with oversized hands.He has wear on his thumbs and one hand has holes on the underside see photos Both hands have discoloration. He wears his original plaid shirt and the remnants of his blue tie along with his blue pants missing one button on the side. 

They are both faded but are structurally sound. He has red and white striped legs and black fabric shoes but his stripes are thinner than those on most Andy dolls and his legs may be old replacements.(not sure)

He has shoe button eyes with tears to the area around one eye with four lashes under the eye. A slim triangle red nose outlined in very faded black and a split smile with red in the middle. He has brows above his eyes. His body fabric has darkened over the years you can see his original muslin color peeking out under his shirt 

16” Ann is probably a little earlier than Andy although they have always been together. Her face appears hand painted as was found on some of the early Vollands. She has brown worsted wool hair  Her legs are red and white striped. She wears her original dress, pantaloons and apron.

 Ann's head is aged and is darker than Andy's; her features are faded too. She has six lashes under her shoe button eyes with white surrounding them. Her triangle red nose is outlined with black and she has her wide smile and brows. There is a darker area seen on her face. A seam on the side of her head needs to be resewn/tightened . Her wooden heart can be felt in her chest. A hole can be seen on her chest near her heart

This pair of early vintage cloth Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, resembling the classic 1918–1920s P.F. Volland Company editions featuring flat painted faces and shoe-button eyes.

Ann has wooden I love you felt in the chest.I could not feel one on Andy and his clothes are sewn on so can not check

Part of an estate I am helping to disperse (see the typed provenance note)P.F. Volland per the note,Include is a small hank of yarn that I think the owner was going to try and add hair to Andy and maybe Ann too.

The clothing seems to be original to when the dolls were made. Some stitches on clothing look handmade and others possibly machine stitched. There is staining and age associated with old dolls.

 Facial features have faded. No musty smell. Some water stains see photos .There are loose stitches on the side of Ann`s face as shown in photos.

They both have black shoe-button eyes, faded hand-painted facial details, and stitch-jointing at the shoulders and hips characteristic.

Each doll is constructed of muslin with stitch-jointed limbs, yarn hair, and hand-painted facial features.

They wear classic early-style patterned garments and striped stockings.

These early character dolls trace back to Johnny Gruelle's original storybooks and patent designs

They are absolutely beautiful primitive aged dolls. Please see photos as part of description and send any questions prior to purchase.

These dolls are as they were stored with the family and have not been washed or cleaned. They have no odors and no insect damage. Look in their eyes – they are searching for a new home.They are still full of personality
