Suzuki Kason (1860-1919), Iris, 1907, Kuchi-e was published in the literary magazine Bungei Kurabu, volume 13, number 7 (1907).

It features a beauty strolling through an iris garden. The zigzag eight-planked bridge in the background refers to the famous acrostic poem, spelling out the word for iris, spoken by a character missing his wife when seeing the iris-strewn marsh (Heian Period, Tales of Ise).

The figure, opens her umbrella as light rain begins to fall. Her purple-fringed shawl covers her dark gray coat. She has her hair pulled into a soft bun pinned by a comb and a single hairpin. The purple and blue blossoms and upright green leaves provide a beautiful setting.
