Condition

NINE CLUBS, counted five ways: nine heads in the first photograph; nine sole markings in a row; nine shafts in one frame; nine grips in one frame; and nine necks with their ferrules in the close panel. Every count gives nine. THE SOLE MARKINGS RUN 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW AND AW, and the two wedges carry their letters in full - PW and AW, two characters each - so they are set out that way here rather than shortened. THE BACKS ARE SMOOTH, ROUNDED MUSCLE BACKS: there is no step or frame around a cavity on these heads, and CONDUCTOR 31CXII stands in black script with MARUMAN SOLE in red beside it, the same on the run. THE SET IS RIGHT HANDED, settled from the faces turned upright with the grooves running level and the wide sole beneath - the toe stands left and the hosel right. THE SHAFTS ARE STEEL, chrome plated and mirror bright, nine of them matched, each carrying an orange band below the grip printed HEAVY with a smaller PRO beside it; the rest of the band print and the flex marking are left out of this description rather than guessed at, and the band is shown here close up so the buyer can see what stands on it. NOW THE CONDITION, AND THIS IS THE HONEST PART. THIS SET HAS BEEN PLAYED HARD. THE SOLES ARE RUBBED ACROSS THEIR WHOLE WIDTH on all nine, fine scratching from turf covering the silver, and the PW and the AW carry the heaviest of it. TWO OF THE NINE SHAFTS CARRY DARK SPECKLING: on one it runs about four inches below the grip and is easy to see, on the other it is lighter. Which numbers those two shafts belong to is left out of this description, and the shaft photograph shows them as they stand. THE GROOVES ON AT LEAST ONE FACE HAVE GONE BROWN in their lower half, towards the sole, and two faces in the wider frame show the same colour; which numbers those are is left out of this description as well, and the close face photograph is included so the buyer can judge the extent. ONE SOLE CARRIES A SMALL REDDISH BROWN SPOT about the size of a pin head: this may be a point of corrosion or it may be a mark of dirt, and both readings are named here rather than picking the kinder one. THE FERRULES HAVE FADED FROM BLACK TOWARDS BROWN on all nine, though all nine are whole and sit tight to the hosels. THE HEADS AND NECKS CARRY FINE SCRATCHING ALL OVER with the plating gone dull - this set does not have showroom shine and is not offered as having it. THE GRIPS RUN TO TWO MODELS: seven carry a scale pattern with pale flecks showing on the surface, and two carry a round dimple pattern, one of those two in cream and one in black. All nine hold their shape and their pattern, and the grip photograph shows the whole row. WHAT STANDS WELL: THE GROOVES STAND ON ALL NINE FACES with their edges sharp, none worn flat; the gold score line above the sole stands on all nine; the heads hold their shape throughout with the leading edges clean and true; the shafts run straight; and the copper coloured band that shows along the soles is the light reflecting, since it falls in the same place on all nine heads.
