Optical Design
The Contax Carl Zeiss Sonnar 90mm F2.8 T* employs a Sonnar-derived optical formula, a design lineage originating from Zeiss's classic Sonnar lenses first developed in the 1930s, adapted here for the Contax G autofocus rangefinder system. The T* multi-coating, Zeiss's proprietary anti-reflective treatment, is applied to reduce flare and ghosting while improving contrast and color fidelity.
Telephoto Portrait Lens for the Contax G System
Designed exclusively for the Contax G1 and G2 autofocus rangefinder cameras, this 90mm moderate telephoto lens was engineered as the system's dedicated portrait optic, complementing the shorter 28mm, 35mm, and 45mm G-mount lenses in the lineup. Its 90mm focal length on 35mm film format provides a natural telephoto perspective suited to headshots and tight portraiture.
Maximum Aperture and Rendering
With a maximum aperture of f/2.8, the lens allows meaningful subject-background separation at this focal length while remaining compact for a rangefinder telephoto design. The Sonnar-type construction is historically noted for producing smooth out-of-focus rendering, a characteristic associated with the original Sonnar formula's reduced element-air-surface count.
Contax G Mount Compatibility
This lens uses the Contax G bayonet mount, a mount system exclusive to the Contax G1 and G2 rangefinder bodies, and is not compatible with Contax/Yashica SLR mounts despite sharing the Zeiss T* branding. Autofocus operation is driven by the host camera body rather than an internal focus motor, consistent with the G system's body-driven AF architecture.
