Carvers & Gilders antique framed painting (copy) of the Grand Duke Paul Petrovich in the Classroom.
Please meet the Emperor of Russia Paul I (1754-1801). The original Portrait of Czar in his childhood, known as "Grand Duke Paul Petrovich in the Classroom" is by Russian painter Virgilius Eriksen (1722-1782). It is from Russia, 1766. The original is an oil painting on canvas, and it hangs in the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This painting (or really well-printed copy) is a loving and beautiful copy on some type of wood, and framed by Carvers & Gilders of England.
The work is secured inside an elaborate gilt gesso frame with heavy scrolling and foliate decoration. The frame is definitely what I would call "extra" – it has swoops, scrolls, leaves and dimension!
Measurements: 18 1/2" by 16 1/2" in almost 3" deep frame with oval painting measurement being approximately 9 1/2" by 7 1/2"
Condition: The portrait is in great condition - shows age-related wear consistent with the years we have owned him. The ornate gilt frame shows greening on a few edges, and has one leaf that was glued back on slightly crooked (bottom right side, please see picture) but is in terrific overall shape. The frame remains structurally intact, and exhibits some wear. This piece is being sold as is and as pictured. A strong decorative portrait with excellent presence, ideal for collectors who appreciate fancy childhood portraiture.
