Description
A large Chinese Imari porcelain dish, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, iron-red enamel and gilt highlights. The centre presents an elegant arrangement of auspicious scholar’s objects, including an incense burner, a vase holding scrolls and various ribboned emblems, surrounded by peonies and other flowering plants. The broad rim is densely painted with scrolling floral sprays, enclosed by double blue lines and a fine iron-red border.
This type of decoration is often known as the Hundred Antiques motif, representing cultured refinement and the scholarly pursuits of antiquity. Chinese Imari porcelain was produced primarily during the Kangxi period for export, inspired by the successful blue, red and gold palette of Japanese Imari wares.
