About Chalcedony

Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of extremely fine intergrowths of quartz and related silica minerals.

Its microscopic crystalline structure produces beautiful and distinctive optical patterns when observed under polarized light. Fine varieties of chalcedony have also been valued as ornamental and gemstone materials for centuries.

Microscopic Observation

Please refer to Photos 2 and 3 for examples of the specimen observed under a polarizing microscope.

  1. Polarized Light Observation
  2. Crossed Nicols / Cross-Polarized Light (XPL) – the background becomes dark, revealing the beautiful optical structure of the mineral.

Observation magnification: 160×

The intricate structure and optical effects of chalcedony make this an especially attractive specimen for polarizing microscopy.

Collector's Item

This is a beautiful vintage thin-section specimen of Chalcedony for polarizing microscope observation.

Old prepared mineralogical microscope slides of this type are becoming increasingly difficult to find, making this an excellent addition to a collection of vintage microscope slides, mineralogical specimens, geological specimens, or antique microscopy accessories.

Please carefully review all photos for the exact condition and details of the specimen.

A rare and visually fascinating piece for microscope collectors, mineral collectors, geologists, and enthusiasts of polarizing microscopy.
