Antique Chinese-Style Playing Card Box, Circa 1920

A beautiful and unusual antique playing card presentation box, believed to date to approximately the 1920s, featuring an intricately carved hardstone-style openwork panel set into the lid.

The decorative centerpiece depicts birds surrounded by flowers and foliage, executed in an exceptionally detailed relief carving. The warm brown exterior is finished with fine gilt-line decoration and ornamental gold detailing, giving the box an elegant early-20th-century appearance.

The fitted interior contains six individual decks of playing cards, each with its own distinctive illustrated design, together with three period-style pencils/mechanical pencils secured inside the lid.

The box displays a wonderful aged patina and genuine signs of use, including surface wear, scratches, finish loss, marks and cracking visible throughout. These imperfections contribute to the character of the piece and have been clearly documented in the photographs.
