Joe Agu is a Nigerian-born ethno-musicologist, instrument maker, and educator based in Silicon Valley. He has been creating traditional African percussion instruments for decades, holds U.S. design patents, and has been recognized by the Smithsonian for his work preserving and promoting African musical culture.

BACKGROUND & USE
The Udu (also called kim-kim) originated with the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria. The word “udu” simply means “vessel” or “pot” in the Igbo language. Early examples were everyday clay water jugs that were adapted for music when a side hole was added. Traditionally played by women in ceremonial and spiritual contexts, the instrument produces deep, resonant “whooping” bass tones by striking the side hole with the palm while modulating the top opening with the other hand. Fingers can also be used on the body for higher, drier tones.In modern music the Udu has become a favorite of jazz, world-fusion, and contemporary percussionists. Its unique liquid, earthy, and atmospheric sound has been used by artists such as Trilok Gurtu (jazz/world fusion), Airto Moreira (with Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum), Glen Velez, Jamey Haddad, and many studio and film composers. 

It is equally at home in jazz ensembles, ambient/new-age recordings, world-music groups, sound-healing sessions, and educational settings.

Good used condition. No structural cracks. Light surface wear, minor rim chips, and natural patina consistent with age and careful use. Lizard is intact. Original woven stand ring included.
