Fabulous old box, the style and size suggest the original purpose was probably to store cigars or cigarettes.

The box is made from a wooden carcass covered externally with embossed sheet metal, probably copper-plated steel or tinned steel with a copper finish with a distinctly Arts & Crafts Aesthetic.

The design is strongly influenced by Persian and Middle Eastern ornament with arabesque scrollwork, stylised foliage, a repeating triangular border and a central vase or urn motif, likely late Victorian or Edwardian, roughly 1880–1920.

It’s approximately 15cm x 8cm x 6cm high.

In good condition, opens and closes well. There is some overall surface wear to the metal and there are a few corners where the metal had lifted ever so slightly.
