Interesting original group of 1952–1953 Dwight D. Eisenhower political and presidential ephemera associated with the prominent Pitcairn family of Pennsylvania, including material connected to Raymond Pitcairn, Nathan Pitcairn and Emily Pitcairn.

The group is particularly interesting for its material documenting the battle for Eisenhower's 1952 Republican nomination against Senator Robert A. Taft. Several pieces concern efforts to influence Pennsylvania's delegation ahead of the Republican National Convention.

Included is a June 5, 1952 "COPY OF TELEGRAM" from Raymond Pitcairn to Pennsylvania Governor John S. Fine, urging Fine and the Pennsylvania delegates to support Eisenhower on the first ballot at the Republican National Convention. The telegram discusses the Pennsylvania Republican electorate, the coming televised convention, and the importance of recognizing the primary vote.

Also included is correspondence addressed to Mr. Nathan Pitcairn at 1616 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, discussing the Eisenhower Advisory Citizen Committee, Citizens for Eisenhower, Americans for Eisenhower, Robert L. Johnson, Governor Fine and efforts to contact Pennsylvania convention delegates. The letter bears a manuscript signature of Raymond Pitcairn.

There is also a "From the desk of Raymond Pitcairn" memorandum asking the recipient and associates to contact Governor Fine and Pennsylvania delegates and urge them to support the nomination of General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The collection includes an issue of "The National Delegate," published by Americans for Eisenhower, with Raymond Pitcairn and William Whitehead identified as editors. The material concerns the bitter Eisenhower-Taft contest at the 1952 Republican National Convention and includes contemporary press commentary.

Also present is the June 17, 1952 issue of the "Eisenhower Letter – Campaign News of the Week," published by Citizens for Eisenhower, with extensive discussion of the Eisenhower/Taft nomination fight, along with additional Eisenhower campaign literature concerning precinct meetings, caucuses, delegates and voter organization. One particularly great period slogan reads, "IKE'S JOB IN EUROPE IS COMPLETED — HIS NEXT ONE IS PRESIDENT."

The group also contains an Official Program of the Inaugural Ceremonies inducting Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard M. Nixon into office on January 20, 1953. The program is inscribed "To: Emily Pitcairn." Congressional/inaugural material bearing the names Mr. & Mrs. Nathan Pitcairn is also included, along with additional related clippings, campaign sheets, correspondence and political ephemera retained together as part of the same Pitcairn-family group.

Raymond Pitcairn was a prominent Pennsylvania attorney, businessman and political activist and a member of the well-known Pitcairn family. Taken together, this material provides an unusually personal look at political organizing within Pennsylvania during the extremely contentious 1952 Republican nomination contest that ultimately resulted in Eisenhower defeating Taft for the nomination and then winning the presidency.

The documents show age, handling, folds, toning, edge wear and other expected signs of use and storage. Some pieces remain grouped with old paper clips. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition and exact contents.
