Japanese Natural Whetstone (JNAT) - Higashi-Ohira Awasedo, Kyoto

A Japanese natural finishing stone (awasedo) from Kyoto. The previous owner describes it as Higashi-Ohira (East Ohira) stone of medium-hard grade, used as a kasumi finishing stone for kanna planes, nomi chisels, kitchen knives and straight razors. I have not had the mine name or the grade independently verified, so please treat the attribution as the previous owner's description and judge the stone from the photographs.

The working face has already been flattened and is ready to use. The colour is the grey-green typical of Kyoto awasedo, with reddish iron spots and fine lines running through the body.

Details

Condition - please read

There are chips and losses along the edges and corners, and the sides are left in their natural unfinished state. This is normal for a natural stone, but please look at the photographs carefully before buying. Reddish iron spots and fine lines run through the stone - these are part of the geology rather than damage, but they are visible on the working face. No box or base is included. Please review all 11 photos, which form part of this description.
