A hand carved wooden Hannya mask, the horned female demon of Japanese Noh and Kyogen theatre. Hannya represents a woman consumed by jealousy and rage, and the carving captures the mixture of anger and sorrow that the design is known for - furrowed brow, bared fangs and two long upswept horns.
The mask is carved from wood with an attractive natural grain running across the forehead and cheeks, and finished in a warm amber tone. The reverse is hollowed out and fitted with a braided cord and two metal eyelets, so it is ready to hang on a wall straight out of the box. There is no maker's mark anywhere on the piece, so it is offered unattributed.
There are small scratches, scuffs and light rubbing on the finished surface, including a small nick on the forehead near the base of the left horn and minor knocks on the horn tips and edges. No cracks and no missing parts were found, and the hanging cord and eyelets are intact. Age is unknown. This is sold as a decorative wall mask for display, not for actual stage use.
