Flora Warren Seymour — Limited Edition, No. 36 of 285 — The Bookfellows, Chicago, 1927
Flora Warren Seymour was a Chicago attorney and author who, with her husband George Steele Seymour, founded the Order of Bookfellows and edited its literary magazine, The Step-Ladder. She would go on to become the first woman appointed to the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. This collection gathers prize-winning poetry that appeared in The Step-Ladder, along with work drawn from The Torch Prize, The Harper Bird-or-Flower contest, The Phillips Prize, and the Sperling Sonnet Prize.
Issued in a genuine fine press edition of only 285 copies, printed at The Torch Press on Van Gelder handmade paper. Every copy contains an original etching, hand-signed by the artist, with fifteen varieties distributed across the run — a real, hand-pulled print bound into the book rather than a printed reproduction. This copy's etching is signed by German artist Willi Foerster (1892–1965), a Rothenburg-based printmaker known for his etchings of that city's medieval architecture. Foerster trained under Otto Ludwig Nägele in Munich, opened his own studio at Rothenburg's Plönlein in 1919, and co-founded the Rothenburger Künstlerbund in 1923. The edition was designed by George Steele Seymour and printed under the personal supervision of Luther Albertus Brewer, both notable figures in American private press circles.
