Nabokov's Lolita was banned outright in France, Britain, and elsewhere on publication and remains among the most contested novels in English, which has kept his name on censorship lists ever since. The banning consistently mistook the book for an endorsement of its narrator, when the novel is built to expose Humbert's self-justification as the elaborate lie of a man destroying a child.Ada's protagonist is no less despicable, as Nabokov again sets the test for the reader against a charming but unreliable narrator.
