Antique Gothic Revival Spelter Altar Crucifix Jesus Cross – 30cm
An attractive antique freestanding altar crucifix, probably dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
The crucifix is cast in a non-magnetic white metal, believed to be spelter, with a substantial stepped architectural base and Gothic Revival trefoil-ended cross.
It has a separately cast figure of Christ with an aged bronzed/gilt finish and good modelling to the face, body and drapery.
The black surface appears to be an old, possibly original japanned or stoved finish and has extensive natural wear, rubbing and losses which reveal the metal beneath. I have deliberately left this untouched as the aged surface gives the piece considerable character.
An oval cast mark or foundry device is present on the rear of the base. I have been unable to identify the maker and therefore make no attribution.
Approximately 30 cm high.
A lovely piece of antique ecclesiastical and religious decorative art, suitable as an altar or devotional crucifix and equally striking as a Gothic, period or unusual interiors piece.
Condition: Antique condition with considerable age-related wear to the black and bronzed finishes, including rubbing, scratches, marks and areas of surface loss. Please study the photographs carefully as these form part of the description. No maker attribution has been made.
