A signed woodcut by the German Expressionist artist Wilhelm Plunnecke (1894-1954). This woodcut was executed in 1923 and depicts the story of Susanna at the Bath.
The image measures 6 1/2 x 5 1/8 inches, the full sheet is approx 9 x 7 inches, including the presentation mat, the whole is about 13 1/2 x 10 inches. The lower margin is hand signed and dated in pencil by the artist. The image is printed on fine laid paper and it is displayed in an old gray/green presentation mat, the woodcut it hinged to the backboard with gummed paper tape and is in excellent condition.
Wilhelm Plünnecke (1894-1954) was a German painter, printmaker, draughtsman and book illustrator. He studied with Emil Orlik in Berlin and at the Leipzig Academy. He served as a soldier in the First World War and some of his artworks depict his wartime experiences. He became a member of the Vereinigung der Hannoverschen Sezession (Hanover Secession) in 1918 and produced the poster for the first exhibition and the cover of the exhibition catalogue. He designed the title page for it in 1919. In 1940 he received his doctorate from the University of Leipzig. He later lived in Tübingen, where he was a university lecturer. From there he moved to Stuttgart, where he worked as a freelancer for the Stuttgarter Nachrichten.
