Original 1894 U.S. Government Printing Office photographic plate removed from the Eleventh Census (1890) report, Indians Taxed and Indians Not Taxed in the United States (Except Alaska).
This original plate features a striking ethnographic photograph taken at the Hoopa Valley Agency, California, depicting the Leader of the White Deerskin Dance, shown wearing a crown of horns and holding a medicine stone. The photograph is credited to Cantwell, photographer, San Francisco, and documents one of the important ceremonial traditions of the Hupa (Hoopa Valley) people during the late nineteenth century.

Removed from a deteriorating original government report. Printed on thin paper as issued by the Government Printing Office. Shows age toning, light handling wear, small repair on bottom -and minor edge wear consistent with removal from a bound volume. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition.
