This is a vintage Helios fountain pen, dating from around the early 1930s, beautifully crafted to a high standard and of excellent quality; an interesting medium-sized vintage Italian pen, a ‘promotional’ pen bearing the name of the Serina Valley-based company ‘Fonte Bracca’, and was therefore undoubtedly given as a free gift by the company as a sales incentive to retailers.
Indeed, Fonte Bracca, based in the Serina Valley in the province of Bergamo, was a renowned company that bottled high-quality mineral water, with offices and representatives in Milan and throughout northern Italy; it also owned a large hotel in Va Serina. I am told that the fountain pens they gave away as gifts (what a gift...!!!) to their top-performing retailers had been commissioned from Fratelli Cavaliere, a leading company in the sector. Indeed, this company’s ‘Gold Overlay’ pens were certainly of high quality and exquisite craftsmanship, often featuring some of the most interesting high-end finishes in the entire ‘Made in Italy’ landscape.
As for Helios, however, little is known; it is said and written that it was either a sub-brand of Kaweco, or (or perhaps also) a company founded by a certain Eugenio Giarola in Milan, though always in some way connected to Kaweco… I shall not express an opinion, as I am not familiar with the history of this brand and shall simply list the various possibilities…
The barrel and cap feature a mixed-style decoration, very simple yet exceptionally well executed, with tiny, densely packed waves on the barrel and cap, whilst the top, the upper ring and the clip are adorned with a beautiful, rich floral relief design – an elegant and refined decoration.
The cosmetic condition is more than good; the pen has no flaws or unsightly scratches and is still in excellent condition.
The nib is a ‘Warranted 14k’, made of solid 14k gold, certainly of Italian manufacture, and everything leads me to believe it is the original nib, given that Flli Cavaliere used these nibs not only for their own pens but, above all, for anonymous pens made to order....
An interesting pen, which I believe is also rare and very striking, in good cosmetic condition, with a length of 116mm when closed.
The pen now for sale is, however, primarily a collector’s item and has not been tested for use, although it is in good condition, and is sold ‘as is’ in its current state.
